Both Hands Photography

about your family session

Being in front of the camera is stressful; knowing what to expect can help. Reading through this section can help you be a little more prepared, and maybe a little more relaxed. I promise, it won't hurt a bit!

  • be flexible

    • We will have a plan in mind at the start of the session, but keep an open mind - we may find the light doesn't work as well here, or find a perfect spot a couple blocks away.

  • look over here

    •  Most of our time will be spent shooting candid shots, but I do like to take a few minutes to shoot some photos with everyone looking at the camera. During this time, keep your eyes on me no matter how tempting it is to just fix that last flyaway piece of hair or tuck in someone's shirt - I want to be able to capture the perfect moment when your little one flashes me a grin.

  • let the kids go... as much as you can

    • I know how tempting it is to try to direct the littles - look here, say cheese, smile etc. However, this tends to lead to confusion - who do I look at? - and less than genuine expressions. I like to spend some time with just your kids at first, on their level, to get to know them a little bit. I have learned plenty of patience from my own kids - we will get there, I promise. The most helpful thing you can do is to remain positive; try your best not to get frustrated or reprimand your child - those threenager moments might just be your favorite shots. Bribes are also strongly encouraged - just save the payout until after the session please!

  • you can play too

    • Your little one will not be interested in sitting still and staring at the camera for our entire session - and that's awesome! Let them explore, take some tickle breaks, check out that cool rock together; those moments captured are the most precious.

  • check the clock

    • Please arrive to your session at least 15 minutes early - this gives you time for parking, last minute outfit adjustments and the inevitable hair repairs.

  • sometimes you should just stay home

    • If you or your kids are sick, please let me know as soon as possible and we can reschedule, no problem. A kiddo who doesn't feel well isn't going to enjoy our shoot, and I promise it will (mostly) be fun!

  • take a deep breath

    •  I know it's hard, but just try and relax, take a deep breath, and trust the process. For the next little bit you don't have to make any decisions, so enjoy it!

  • weather report

    •  We will reschedule your outdoor session if it is raining, below 40 degrees, or very overcast. I will be watching the weather closely, but don't give up too soon - Midwest weather changes on a dime.

  • pack a bag

    •  It's a good idea to bring along a few essentials - we all know accidents happen, so bringing a spare change of clothes for your little ones is a great idea. Also toss in some snacks and waters and some comfy shoes. Feel free to bring your baby's lovey, favorite blanket or special toy.
