what do i wear???

  • don't match, complement

    • Coordinate your outfits instead of matching with all white shirts and all denim jeans... choose a general color scheme that complements: blues and grays, browns and greens, black white and gray with a pop of color from mom's aqua top or baby girl's floral dress.

  • use pattern and texture

    • Patterns add visual interest to photos; just make sure to choose small patterns that don't distract. Add texture with different fabrics like lace, corduroy or cable knit wool.

  • start at the beginning

    • Coming up with what to wear is overwhelming; it helps to just start with one piece, and use that to build from, one family member at a time. When dressing your family, start with one focal piece (ie mom's floral dress, baby's polka dot romper) and pull your color scheme and outfit coordination from there.

  • keep it simple

    • Outfit changes tend to take away from valuable picture taking time, and can make cranky participants even crankier.  Instead consider layers that can easily come off or be added like a cardigan or fitted jacket.

  • but bring options

    • The exception to the outfit change rule would be if you are having individual portraits or a maternity session; in this case we encourage you to bring one or two outfit changes for some variety in your photographs.

  • dress for the weather

    • Think layers again - it's not the perfect outfit if you're miserably hot or trying not to show your goosebumps.

  • be timeless

    • Avoid anything too trendy - you want your photos to last.

  • don't forget the piggies

    • If you want to wear fancy heels, feel free, but be sure to bring alternatives such as flip flops - we might be hiking a bit. If you can't decide, bare feet in summer photos are always a winner.

  • let everyone have a say - be true to you

    • While coordinating is important, allow your kids a say too - if your daughter HATES dresses, now isn't the time to force her into one. Although the goal is a cohesive look, you still want your family to be its unique and beautiful self.
